The Conjuring : Last Rites

The Conjuring: Last Rites 2025 is American supernatural horror film directed by Michael Chaves and penned by Ian Goldberg, Richard Naing, and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick. Inspired by the real-life Smurl haunting investigated by Ed and Lorraine Warren, the film is based on an original story co-developed by James Wan and Johnson-McGoldrick. The movie features Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, reprising their iconic roles as the Warrens, alongside Ben Hardy and newcomer Mia Tomlinson in her first major film role. Serving as a direct sequel to The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021), it also marks the ninth and concluding chapter of the first phase of The Conjuring Universe. Michael Chaves returns to the director’s chair following the previous installment, with James Wan and Peter Safran once again producing.

The conjuring : Last Rites Plot

The Conjuring : Last Rutes 2025

In The Conjuring: Last Rites (2025), the chilling story begins in 1964 when Ed and Lorraine Warren investigate a mysterious antique mirror in a curio shop. As Lorraine touches it, the mirror shatters and she collapses, receiving a terrifying vision of an evil entity and her unborn child. Rushed to the hospital, Lorraine gives birth to their only daughter, Judy, who is briefly stillborn before being miraculously revived. This traumatic moment foreshadows the horrors to come.

The film then moves forward twenty-two years, when the Smurl family relocates to a two-story house in Pennsylvania. Jack and Janet Smurl live there with Jack’s parents, Mary and John, and their four daughters: Dawn, Heather, and twins Carin and Shannon. During Heather’s confirmation, John gifts her a large mirror, unknowingly bringing a sinister force into the home. Soon after, paranormal disturbances escalate — disembodied voices, shadowy figures, and violent attacks focus around the mirror. When the older daughters attempt to dispose of it, the entity strikes back, embedding glass shards inside Dawn and assaulting Jack. Desperate, the Smurls go public with their haunting.

Meanwhile, Judy Warren, now grown, experiences increasingly disturbing visions tied to the cursed mirror, Annabelle, and a mysterious older woman. When Father Gordon seeks to help the Smurls, he is driven to suicide by the demon. Judy secretly travels to Pennsylvania after sensing his death, forcing Ed, Lorraine, and Tony Spera to chase after her. Upon arrival, the Warrens witness the true horror of the Smurl haunting. Lorraine realizes the demon tied to the mirror is responsible for past murders in the house, and Judy becomes its prime target.

In the climactic battle of *The Conjuring: Last Rites*, the mirror’s power grows stronger, trapping Lorraine and threatening Judy’s soul. Ed, Lorraine, and Judy unite their strength, using prayers and faith to destroy the mirror once and for all. The Smurls, finally free, continue to live in their home for several more years, while the Warrens secure the cursed mirror in their occult museum.

The emotional finale of *The Conjuring: Last Rites* sees Judy marrying Tony, with Ed proudly walking her down the aisle. Familiar faces from previous Conjuring cases — Carolyn Perron, Janet Hodgson, and David Glatzel — appear as wedding guests, tying the universe together. The film closes with Ed and Lorraine sharing a final dance, reflecting on how their love and faith protected them against evil for more than three decades.

the Conjuring : Last Rites Casting

In The Conjuring: Last Rites, the returning cast and new additions bring the haunting story to life. Vera Farmiga once again portrays Lorraine Warren, the gifted clairvoyant and trance medium, while Madison Lawlor plays a younger version of Lorraine in flashbacks. Patrick Wilson reprises his role as Ed Warren, the famed demonologist, author, and lecturer, with Orion Smith portraying young Ed. Mia Tomlinson makes her feature film debut as Judy Warren, the daughter of Ed and Lorraine, and Ben Hardy appears as Tony Spera, Judy’s boyfriend who later becomes her husband.

The Smurl family, central to the story of The Conjuring: Last Rites, is portrayed by Rebecca Calder as Janet Smurl and Elliot Cowan as Jack Smurl. Their daughters are played by Kíla Lord Cassidy (Heather), Beau Gadsdon (Dawn), Molly Cartwright (Shannon), and Tilly Walker (Carin). Peter Wight takes on the role of Grandpa Smurl, while Kate Fahy plays Grandma Smurl. Other supporting roles include John Brotherton as Brad Hamilton, Shannon Kook returning as Drew Thomas, and Grace Kemp as Nellie.

Adding depth to the continuity of the universe, The Conjuring: Last Rites features cameo appearances by the real Tony Spera and Judy Warren during Ed’s birthday party scene. The film also revisits characters from earlier installments: Lili Taylor and Mackenzie Foy reprise their roles as Carolyn and Cindy Perron from the first film, Frances O’Connor and Madison Wolfe return as Peggy and Janet Hodgson from the second film, and Julian Hilliard reprises his role as David Glatzel from the third.

In a memorable moment during Judy’s wedding scene, fans of The Conjuring: Last Rites will notice these familiar faces gathered as guests, tying together the larger Conjuring Universe. Director James Wan even makes an uncredited cameo appearance at the ceremony, further rewarding longtime followers of the franchise. This careful blending of new and returning characters makes The Conjuring: Last Rites a powerful conclusion to the first phase of The Conjuring last rites.
